The results are in on our last match at Grafham Water Sunday 18th July. It was a busy morning at Grafham with Grafham Water Fly Fishing association holding their 40th Anniversary Match so plenty of activity and queuing for the shop and a bustling boat pontoon.
We decided to start from 8-00am to avoid the rush, weather conditions were not looking productive for trout fishing and some members had already cancelled due to predicted temperatures being reached.
Boats headed over to the North Shore around the ‘P’ Buoy / Hedge End area of the Reservoir. Crossing over there was signs of Algae blooms in the water but the nearer to the North Shore the water was clearing. Most of GWFFA boats also headed over to this area with the aerators and inlet being excluded to them, they were fishing a floating line only competition so if you saw them catching you did not have the problem, on working out what lines they were on.
Fish were showing and moving when we first got out and were seeing rods bend as the sun had not got to its highest point yet. A gently breeze broke out, and was all over the place at times, to create a ripple on the water although it was not doing much for the sailing fraternity who had ventured out.
Most of us were fishing floaters or slow sinking tip lines with a FAB on the point and a selection of nymphs. There was a good selection of insect life on the water with buzzers, sedge and damsels emerging. We had arranged to meet up for lunch in Church Bay. Where it emerged that the tropical bright sun and clear skies had done nothing to improve our catch figures with the best boat having 2 fish.
It was agreed at lunch to pack up when you like, or if not at 4-00pm. Although no one had gone to the dark side and ventured on the inlet that was to change in the afternoon. Most of the boats had gone early afternoon as GWFFA were having a BBQ at 2-30. Some of us had a trip around the water only to find the reservoir more coloured around ‘G’ buoy ‘Willows’ area and ended up back around Hedge End. Ray Storer ventured on to the Inlet and quickly took 7 fish to end up with 8 fish. Jeff Hickson and Jim Pike after a slow morning also ended up on the inlet finishing with 10 fish in total.
The best boat on the day was Jeff and Jim with 10 fish in total followed by Ray Storer with 8 fish on what was a challenging day due to extreme heat. Thanks to all those for turning up in those challenging conditions our next planned match is our Anniversary match at Pitsford Water on Wednesday 8th September 2021, details to follow nearer the date.
